The digital asset industry has progressed from a rudimentary phase to a structured sector defined by regulated governance, rigorous audits and scalable revenue models. Crypto exchanges, which started as experimental ventures, now look like well-established financial institutions, complete with compliance and investor relations departments, and far-reaching capital strategies. These advancements denote readiness for Initial Public Offerings (IPOs), according to Tracy Jin, chief operating officer of MEXC. Recently, Circle, a major issuer of the USDC stablecoin, grossed $1.1 billion in its public listing, a development that exceeded expectations and set a 167% record gain on its first day of trading. Similarly, Gemini, the exchange founded by Cameron and Tyler Winklevoss, confidentially filed for a US listing. Soon after, Bullish, a digital asset exchange backed by billionaire investor Peter Thiel made a similar filing. It is noteworthy that positive market sentiment is pivotal for these successful launches. Jin credited this to the influx of capital into Bitcoin and Ether Exchange Traded Funds (ETFs) in the US. This bull market scenario has increased valuations and brought wealth for early investors, hence opening the IPO window. Yet, market sentiment only partially drives this trend. Clarity in regulatory frameworks, like Markets in Crypto-Assets Regulation (MiCA) in Europe and US ETF approvals, have helped make crypto less risky for institutional investors. In the past, regulatory ambiguity in markets like the US made public market investors hesitant. However, new regulations, though not comprehensive, provide enough clarity to legitimize listings in the eyes of Wall Street. The digital asset industry has significantly matured. The sector now has audited financials, established governance, and sustainable revenue derived from custody, staking, and trading. Therefore, crypto firms are now IPO-ready. Infrastructure and fintech-adjacent firms will mostly dominate this new IPO trend, followed by blockchain analytics, staking services, secure custody providers, and stablecoin issuers. This momentum is sustainable, but selective. Only firms that appear more like tech or fintech companies, instead of a pure bet on token prices, will likely succeed. Asia could emerge as a hotspot for crypto activities. Jin cited Metaplanet’s Bitcoin treasury strategy as a sign of growing regional adoption. Moreover, concerns over currency depreciation in Japan have made Bitcoin an attractive hedge. Jin also envisaged a future for crypto-related financial engineering. For example, MicroStrategy’s use of convertible notes to offer yield with upside exposure sets a precedent. Major banks such as Goldman Sachs and JP Morgan will likely release a surge of structured products. This development does not suggest institutions are ready to hold crypto on their balance sheets on a large scale. However, it is a step towards this direction. These structured products will serve as a blueprint for mainstream adoption, starting as a niche play but gradually building institutional comfort with the asset class.
