Harvard Management Company Invests Heavily in BlackRock’s Bitcoin ETF

Harvard Management Company’s Multimillion-Dollar Investment in Bitcoin

The Harvard Management Company, tasked with overseeing the university’s impressive $53-billion endowment fund, recently reported a substantial investment in a Bitcoin exchange-traded fund (ETF). This new investment endeavor, managed by BlackRock, represents yet another sign of the times as institutions increasingly adopt the use of cryptocurrencies.

Details of the Investment

According to an official filing made with the US Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) on a Friday, Harvard disclosed that it has acquired approximately 1.9 million shares of the iShares Bitcoin ETF as of June 30. The BTC exposure was valued at over $116 million, which made it the fifth-largest investment for the endowment fund for that period. This placed it behind only investments in major technology giants such as Microsoft, Amazon, Booking Holdings, and Meta.

Harvard’s Endowment Fund

As of June 30, 2024, Harvard’s endowment fund was recorded at $53.2 billion, solidifying its status as the largest among US universities. Other notable institutions, such as Yale, Stanford, and Princeton, trail behind. The allocation of these assets is done strategically to anticipate volatile periods, as explained by Robert Kaplan, Martin Marshall professor of management practice in business administration, in a video disclosing the endowment’s purpose in 2017.

Harvard and Cryptocurrency

While the endowment appeared to heavily focus on technology companies in its portfolio in 2025, Harvard had been reportedly considering shares in cryptocurrency funds as early as 2018. The university’s decision to invest in a Bitcoin ETF seems to indicate a broader shift in attitudes towards cryptocurrency within Harvard’s investment strategies.

Harvard isn’t alone in its crypto commitments. Emory University became one of the first significant US endowments to report exposure to digital asset ETFs in 2024, buying a sizable number of shares worth over $15 million at that time.

The SEC’s Role

The SEC approved the listing and trading of the BlackRock BTC ETF and 10 other funds in January 2024. Up to current date, the fund has grown to have more than $86 billion in net assets, as per BlackRock’s data. The SEC has recently announced an increase in the number of permitted options contracts from 25,000 to 250,000 for all ETFs with options, which also includes the iShares Bitcoin ETF. This change is expected to spark further demand for this crypto investment vehicle.

Conclusion

Harvard Management Company’s investment into a Bitcoin ETF is a strategic maneuver that complements the growing trend among institutional investors to embrace cryptocurrency as a viable alternative asset class. Only time will tell if more institutions will follow suit, and how this shift may influence the broader financial landscape.
