Ethereum Surpasses Bitcoin in Spot Market Trading Volumes for the First Time Since 2017

Ethereum Takes the Lead Over Bitcoin in Spot Market Trading Volumes

According to a recently published report, Ethereum (ETH), with all its revolutionary characteristics, has outpaced Bitcoin (BTC) when it comes to the volume of spot market trading on major centralized exchanges, also known as CEXs. This unprecedented leap marks Ethereum’s enhanced share of over 32% in the entire exchange activity for the current month. This is Ethereum’s paramount level since the summer month of August in 2017. This analysis derives from an elaborative report released by the renowned crypto exchange, CEXIO. As per the detailed insights from the data, Ethereum’s dominance was more influential on certain platforms. For instance, on CEXIO itself, Ether accounts overwhelm with more or less 39% of the total weekly spot trades. This marks an approximate increase from the preceding numbers of 28% a month earlier.

The Rise Of Ethereum’s Trading Volume

A significant surge was observed, hitting mainly the transactions under $3,000. This suggests an increased participation by retail traders. As Bitcoin went through a volatile price phase, Ethereum, in a rather silent manner, took over Bitcoin as the most-traded cryptocurrency in the spot market. This hinted at a decisive shift in traders’ focus. The analysis indicated a consistent growth in Ethereum’s dominance in volume each week, thus widening the gap between Bitcoin and other digital assets. With all this going on, Ethereum has managed a strong rally in recent times. The ETH is currently trading near the $4,300 mark. This represents a rise of 4% on the day, an increase of 18.5% in the past couple of weeks, and an overall rise of 12% over the past month.

Bitcoin’s Current Trading Status

On the other hand, Bitcoin’s current trading status stands at a steady rate of $113,900. This represents a flat rate both on the day and fortnight. Even so, Bitcoin’s annual performance shows a near rise of 93%. This recent acceleration of price momentum has resulted in the fast-paced capital rotation into ETH throughout this month. Surprisingly, Ethereum recorded a 23% increase in net position changes while Bitcoin’s net positions fell by almost 43%.

Ethereum’s Impact on Capital Rotation

As result of the changes in capital rotation, Ethereum has now surpassed Bitcoin. This surprisingly indicates that traders are not just shifting funds towards Ethereum, but are doing so at the expense of Bitcoin. However, the report did caution investors. Although this shift may lead to short-term gains for Ether, it suggested caution in the mid-term. In a market where change is the only constant, investors should be aware that such a development may be a sign indicating the later stages of the market cycle. In the past cycles, Ethereum attracted more capital inflows than Bitcoin at the tail end of the bull run. This could suggest the market may be heading towards a more profound correction.

The Record-Breaking Inflows in Ethereum (ETFs)

The current trend does not stop there. Ethereum has observed approximately $3.5 billion as net inflows for the Spot ETH exchange-traded funds (ETFs) in the last week. This breaks the previous record of $2.1 billion of inflows in mid-July. The massive inflow doesn’t stop there. Even the daily inflow record was shattered last week. Around $1.02 billion was the recorded figure on Monday, Aug. 11. It should be noted that BTC ETFs had a much softer week attracting a net total of approximately $793 million inflows. These figures strongly suggest that Wall Street has been shifting focus towards Ethereum recently. This week, both ETH and BTC ETFs have been recording only net outflows so far. In specific terms, BTC ETFs experienced around $659 million in outflows, while the ETH ETFs have recorded around $686 million in outflows.
