US Government Likely to Form Strategic Bitcoin Reserve by End of This Year, Predicts Galaxy Digital’s Alex Thorn

The United States government looks set to create the much-anticipated Strategic Bitcoin Reserve in 2021, says Alex Thorn, head of research at Galaxy Digitals. Despite this assertion, others in the industry remain skeptical about this probability.

Strategic Bitcoin Reserve: What’s the likelihood?

In discussing the development of a Strategic Bitcoin Reserve (SBR), Thorn elucidates, “I still think there’s a strong chance the US government will announce this year that it has formed the Strategic Bitcoin Reserve (SBR) and is formally holding BTC as a strategic asset.” Thorn also mentions the market underestimating the likelihood of such declaration. In March, the then President Donald Trump signed an executive order which established the Strategic Bitcoin Reserve and the US Digital Asset Stockpile. However, a strategic plan formalizing this decision is yet to be confirmed.

Recent Developments

Some recent developments hint that despite the lack of confirmation, progress towards the realization of the plan continues. A proposal urging the US Treasury to study the feasibility and technical aspects of the Strategic Bitcoin Reserve was introduced by US lawmakers on Tuesday. On July 31, Cointelegraph issued a report that the Trump administration maintains interest in the strategic Bitcoin reserve. This was confirmed by Trump’s crypto liaison, despite its fleeting mention in a recently published crypto policy report. However, there are those within the crypto sector who doubt this development will occur soon. Dave Weisburger, CoinRoutes’ former chairman, thinks this is unlikely until 2026. He suggests that the present administration is too prudent to disclose any information until they amass their initial target. Given the delay in acquiring Bitcoin, some prominent pro-Bitcoin voices have voiced concerns that the US may lag behind. Samson Mow, founder of Jan3, has warned that the U.S. needs to start acquiring Bitcoin this year. He suggests that other countries could outpace the US in this strategic move if they fail to do so. He particularly mentions Pakistan as a possible front-runner.

Global Developments

Globally, we can see advancements in this direction. This Wednesday, legislation to establish a state cryptocurrency reserve in Kyrgyzstan, a key player in Central Asia’s crypto market, was introduced. Similarly, on Aug 6, an Indonesian Bitcoin advocacy group, Bitcoin Indonesia, claimed to have had a discussion with Indonesian officials regarding how Bitcoin strategies could fuel the country’s economic growth. Despite these disclosures and global movement towards holding Bitcoin as a strategic asset, the realization of a Strategic Bitcoin Reserve within the US remains uncertain. However, the probability of its development can affect the market dynamics of Bitcoin significantly. Therefore, traders and investors are keeping a keen eye on further revelations relating to this. Conclusively, the potential establishment of a Strategic Bitcoin Reserve by the United States heralds great potential for enhancing the legitimacy and stability of Bitcoin as a strategic asset. Further governmental legitimization could present numerous opportunities for investors if the reserve plan comes to fruition. However, such a development may be a few years away, based on the timelines given by pundits within the crypto industry.
