Binance Introduces New Partnerships for Enhanced KYC and Sanctions Protocols
In an outstanding stride towards security, world-famous cryptocurrency exchange, Binance, has announced new alliances aimed at strengthening its know-your-customer (KYC) and sanctions protocols. These partnerships feature prominent financial analytics company, Kharon, and prominent API-native screening provider, Neterium.
Providing Industry-Leading Data and Analytics
As part of the agreement, Binance seeks to utilize the innovative capacities provided by these collaborations to offer top-tier data and analytics that will help augment their sanctions screening procedures and, equally importantly, enhance the performance of its KYC protocols.
Advancing Transaction Screening with Kharon and Neterium
With this collaboration, Binance’s transaction screening environment will benefit significantly from the integration of Kharon’s data. This integration will be carried out in association with Neterium. The collaboration promises to spur the creation and deployment of avant-garde data solutions that will further enhance the capacity of cryptocurrency trading platforms to detect and discourage fraudulent activities.
Reinforcing Compliance & Risk Mitigation
According to Chagri Poyraz, Global Head of Sanctions at Binance, the intent behind this fresh alliance is to establish an unbeatable compliance program worthy of emulation across the industry. He further explained that the partnerships with Kharon and Neterium positions Binance to embrace Kharon’s world-class data alongside Neterium’s pioneering technology to address existing and potential risks.
Building Robust Compliance Program with Quality Data and Technology
Also expressing optimism on the new partnership was Howard Mendelsohn, Chief Client Officer at Kharon, who noted that compliance programs of virtual asset service providers require top-shelf data and technology. He stated that partnering with Binance to provide data and analytic tools marks crucial progress towards combating risks and meeting expanding regulatory expectations.
Binance’s Stance on Sanctions & The Russian Situation
Interestingly, Binance’s CEO, Changpeng Zhao (CZ), initially resisted the idea of applying sanctions against Russian users in the wake of the Ukraine conflict. According to CZ, banning Russians from accessing crypto exchanges was unfair, maintaining that the evasion of economic sanctions was not unique to the crypto space.
However, CZ’s stance seemed to shift soon after as Binance, presumably due to government pressure, swung to action, announcing more stringent sanctions-related restrictions on its platform.
In accordance with the EU’s fifth package of restrictive measures against Russia, Binance had to limit services for Russian nationals residing in Russia or legal entities established in Russia. This applied specifically to those with crypto assets exceeding the value of 10,000 EUR.
Binance Leading by Example
In conclusion, Binance, with its latest move to improve its compliance program, continues to establish itself a leader in the industry. The enduring steps taken by the platform towards the better implementation of these sanctions are indeed commendable. It is expected that other leading exchanges will follow suit and commit to the same rules shortly.
