Crypto Market Outlook: Bitcoin Consolidation, Altcoin Volatility, and Potential Impact of Fed Policy on Crypto Investments

After reaching unprecedented highs during the summer, Bitcoin is experiencing a mild cooling off period. Meanwhile, altcoins are showing varying trends with some signs of flickering while investors keep their eyes on policies from the Federal Reserve. The crypto world is waiting in anticipation to see whether these trends will lead to another rally or a deeper retreat.

Bitcoin’s Pause Post-Summer Rally

Bitcoin, the first and most recognized cryptocurrency, had skyrocketed to an all-time high of $124,000 in mid-August. However, it has now stabilized around the $111,000 mark, which is still an impressive figure. Large institutions like MicroStrategy and Metaplanet have strategically continued to invest and increase their Bitcoin holdings despite this consolidation phase.

Bitcoin’s consolidation has not deterred large institutional buyers. MicroStrategy disclosed a new purchase of 1,955 BTC for a whopping $217 million, increasing its total Bitcoin holdings to 638,460 BTC. Metaplanet also followed suit, buying 136 BTC worth approximately $15.2 million, averaging $111,666 per coin. The Tokyo-based firm now holds 20,136 BTC, which it acquired for $2.08 billion at an average cost of $103,196.

Movement in the Altcoin Market

Altcoins, on the other hand, seem to be reflecting Ethereum’s cautious tone. Ethereum had reached an all-time high of $4,953 in late August but has been trading between $4,240 and $4,480 over the past week. Ethereum’s pullback from its peak has been sharper and longer than Bitcoin’s, and it is currently trading around $4,300 – 13% down from its all-time high. Simultaneously, altcoins like Solana and XRP are inching higher, whereas tokens like Dogecoin, Hyperliquid, Worldcoin, and WLFI are showcasing mixed volatility.

XRP, known for its payment protocol, has been a focal point for investors due to the anticipation of a potential exchange-traded fund linked to the altcoin. Despite the ongoing speculations, the XRP token briefly soared above $3, after which it slightly corrected itself to $2.94.

Impact of Macroeconomic Factors

In response to softness in the U.S. labor market, there are raised expectations surrounding a potential rate cut by the Federal Reserve in September. Approximately 90% of market participants are anticipating a rate cut of 25 basis points, while 10% are considering the possibility of a 50 basis point cut. Meanwhile, the Fear & Greed Index continues to stay at 42, indicating a fragile sentiment in the market.

With jobless claims and tariff uncertainties being at the helm of concerns for investors, the path forward for crypto will likely correspond with Bitcoin’s movement, influencing altcoins to follow the broader trend, concluded with project-specific short-term rallies or corrections.

Crypto Market Amid a Fragile Macroeconomic Sentiment

With the latest U.S. labor market data showing signs of slowing down and the unemployment rate at its highest since 2021, there are strengthened expectations that the Federal Reserve will commence an easing monetary policy at its mid-September meeting. Roughly 90% of market participants are expecting a 25 basis point rate cut while about 10% are anticipating a more aggressive 50 basis point move.

This anticipated move would mark 2025’s first rate cut after a year of steady rates, while central banks across Europe and the United Kingdom have already reduced their borrowing costs multiple times. With this expectation of a looser U.S. monetary policy in view, there could be a boost in confidence in risk assets, which could, in turn, encourage investment inflows, including in the crypto market.

In conclusion, with slower growth, easing inflation, and the prospect of lower borrowing costs, a supportive environment for Bitcoin and other digital assets could be established in the coming weeks. However, investors should be cautious considering the overall fragile macroeconomic sentiment influenced by tariff uncertainty and a high number of jobless claims. Therefore, whether it signals a forthcoming rally or suggests a deeper retreat, only time will tell.
