Crypto Custody Firm BitGo Announces US IPO Amid Rising Institutional Demand for Digital Assets

BitGo Announces US Initial Public Offering

In the latest development in the burgeoning world of cryptocurrencies, BitGo, a company that facilitates custody services for digital assets, has filed for an Initial Public Offering (IPO) in the United States. The firm aspires to tap into the growing institutional demand for digital asset infrastructure, a trend that has been encouraged by the Trump administration’s policies.

Listing Details

BitGo has revealed plans to make its Class A Common Stock available for trading on the New York Stock Exchange, under the ticker symbol BTGO. This decision came into the light following their Form S-1 registration with the Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC), as made public on a recent Friday.

BitGo’s Growth and Scope

Notably, BitGo, based in Palo Alto, reported around $90.3 billion in assets on its platform as of June 30, 2025. Its user base reportedly extends to over 4,600 entities and more than 1.1 million users scattered across 100 countries.

In addition, the company facilitates transactions of over 1,400 digital assets, making its services essential to a variety of crypto-native firms, financial institutions, governments and high-net-worth individuals. To secure its clients’ assets, the firm has obtained an insurance coverage of $250 million and has successfully completed Service Organization Control (SOC) 1 and SOC 2 audits.

Leadership and Control

BitGo’s current control structure indicates that co-founder and CEO Michael Belshe will retain authority through a dual-class share arrangement. Belshe holds Class B shares, which carry 15 votes each, compared to a single vote for Class A shares. Such a unique setup allows BitGo to qualify as a controlled company under NYSE rules, thereby exempting it from certain governance standards.

Expansion in Europe

The recent IPO filing by BitGo coincides with the firm securing an extended license from Germany’s Federal Financial Supervisory Authority (BaFin). This regulatory approval enables its European branch to provide trading, custody, staking, and transfer services under the Markets-in-Crypto-Assets (MiCA) framework operational within the European Union.

Traditional Banks Entering Crypto Custody

Efforts to establish cryptocurrency custody services are not exclusive to BitGo. A report from earlier this month highlighted US Bancorp’s relaunch of its digital asset custody services, aimed at institutional investment managers, following a regulatory rollback by the Trump administration. US Bancorp initially launched the service in 2021 and had to pause due to compliance constraints. Upon the rule’s reversal, US Bancorp has made a comeback in the crypto industry.

Further, significant traditional financial institutions have been making strides in the field of crypto custody. In July, Deutsche Bank, Germany’s largest bank, announced their intentions to allow clients to store cryptocurrencies in the coming year. In addition, Citigroup reportedly considered plans to offer cryptocurrency custody and payment services in August.

Conclusion

BitGo’s move to file for an IPO in the US sends a clear signal about the growing integration of traditional financial systems with the digital asset space. As more firms explore opportunities for expansion and profit in cryptocurrencies, the infrastructure for digital asset management seems to be robustly growing.

This growth coincides with increased institutional sponsorship and growing regulatory clarity, suggesting a bright future for firms like BitGo, alongside a new era in the financial world facilitated by the integration of cryptocurrencies and traditional banking systems.
