Fundstrats Tom Lee may think that the hype around digital asset treasuries (DATs) is over, but his bullish sentiments for Ether remain unabated. Since the recent market meltdown, Lee has bought Ether worth around a stunning $1.5 billion. This commitment is a bold testament to his belief that Ethereum, the blockchain platform that underpins Ether, would flip Bitcoin soon, just like how equities overtook gold post-1971.
Acquisitions by BitMine
BitMine Immersion Technologies, another major player in the global ETH market, have made three sizeable acquisitions of Ether as well. Their purchases came after the record crypto market liquidation event last weekend, when an overwhelming number of investors pulled out their stakes. BitMine has chalked up a cumulative sum of 379,271 ETH, equivalent to almost $1.5 billion. The company made its acquisitions in three separate investments: an eye-popping 202,037 ETH after the Crash; 104,336 ETH on Thursday and finally, 72,898 ETH on Saturday.
This information was revealed from onchain data, and while it has yet to be officially confirmed by BitMine, if accurate, these figures mark BitMine’s position as the largest ETH treasury company globally. Reportedly, their 3 million ETH cache makes up 2.5% of the total ETH supply, valued at a whopping $11.7 billion. BitMine’s ambitious goal is to own 5% of the total supply, and remarkably, they began their accumulation endeavor when ETH was valued around the $2,500 mark in early July.
Effect of Digital Asset Treasury Bubble on Ethereum
Lee, in his latest statement, expressed his concern over the aggressive accumulation of Ether. He opined that this trend continues despite his belief that the digital asset treasury bubble has burst. Supporting this speculation, Lee mentioned that many DATs are currently trading under their net asset value (NAV). NAV signifies the actual value of the underlying assets. Communicating his thoughts to Fortune on Thursday, he suggested if the already trading values are not an indication of a burst bubble, he wonders what it will take to unequivocally confirm so.
Other Leading Crypto Companies
That said, there are still a handful of leading researchers and strategists who believe in the potential of DAT’s. 10x Research, for example, reported that big DATs like Metaplanet and Strategy are currently trading at or below their NAVs. However, 10x argues that this development is not completely negative, as firms with considerable capital bases and well-versed administration teams may still create meaningful alpha.
Huobi Founder’s Strategy
Supporting this outlook, Huobi’s founder, Li Lin, has reportedly raised an estimated $1 billion. The funds are part of his strategy to invest in an ETH treasury. Following the last Friday trade, Lee told CNBC that investors were still attempting to come to terms with the record-level flush out caused by leverage but were also envious of gold’s impressive performance this year. The crypto markets are currently experiencing a 15% decline from their record peak set on October 7th. Simultaneously, gold prices have seen an almost 3% decrease from their Thursday peak.
In conclusion, while the recent market crash has rocked the cryptocurrency world, committed investors and financial institutions like Tom Lee and BitMine continue to maintain a bullish outlook on Ether. Their belief stems from the continued efforts of Ethereum developers to improve platform capabilities and bring more transparency, speed, and efficiency to blockchain projects. As for the ETH market, only time will tell how it will evolve post the current turbulence.
