$179 Million Unlocked as Two Rare Casascius Coins Get Activated After 13 Years

Decade-old Casascius Coins Containing 1,000 BTC Each Activated

A significant development in the cryptocurrency sector took place recently. Two Casascius coins, each containing 1,000 Bitcoin, were just activated. These coins had been in dormant status for an impressive span of over a decade. The awakening of these digital assets unlocks a staggering value amounting to more than $179 million.

Coinage and Historical Background

The particular pair of Casascius coins have a fascinating backstory. According to onchain data, one of the coins was minted in October 2012. This period marked a time when Bitcoin was trading at a mere $11.69. Meanwhile, the other Casascius coin was minted slightly earlier, in December 2011. At that time, the value of Bitcoin was a trifling $3.88. This early minted coin yields a theoretical return of about 2.3 million percent — a calculation exclusive of the cost of minting.

Now, these vintage coins are more than mere chunks of digital value. Casascius coins are tangible metal coins or bars conceived and created by entrepreneur Mike Caldwell from Utah. Caldwell’s innovative operation took place between 2011 and 2013. During this time, he would take Bitcoin and encapsulate it within physical coins, creating a tangible connection to the digital treasure inside. As a result, Casascius coins are highly sought-after collectibles in Bitcoin circles.

Design and Features

Every Casascius coin features an embedded piece of paper. This paper bears a specific digital Bitcoin value and is safeguarded by a tamper-resistant hologram. Casascius coins and bars were released in various denominations. These included 1, 5, 10, 25, 100, 500, and 1,000 BTC. Such a range represented an intriguing take on the virtual nature of Bitcoin, giving it a physical form and presence.

Production Hurdles

Caldwell’s successful enterprise hit a roadblock when he received a letter from FinCEN, sparking concerns that he may have been operating a money transmitter business without a license. In response to this potential legal issue, Caldwell suspended his business operations. Only 16 units of the 1,000 BTC bars and six units of the 1,000 BTC coins were ever made, according to some available records.

Redemption and Value

The person who reclaims the private key by removing the holographic sticker becomes the recipient of the coin’s full value. Following this, the coin no longer possesses any Bitcoin value. Nevertheless, redeeming a Casascius coin for its Bitcoin equivalent doesn’t necessarily imply an impending deluge of Bitcoin on the market. It requires the owner to ‘cash in’ the physical coin to access the digital asset stored within.

The Scenario of Activation

In July, a Casascius coin owner with 100 Bitcoins, John Galt, transferred his holdings from the physical coin to a hardware wallet for ease of access. He clarified that he had no immediate plans to liquidate these holdings. Owning 100 BTC is a life-changing asset for anyone, he stated.

Despite the impressive worth of his coin, Galt maintained that his motivation wasn’t getting rich quick. Rather, his primary concern was staying safe, emphasizing the need for security in dealing with valuable crypto assets. Now with the activation of the two Casascius coins, they stand as tangible reminders of Bitcoin’s early days and a potentially lucrative asset to their owners. This activation chronicles another intriguing chapter in the thrilling story of Bitcoin’s journey.
