Coinbase Refutes Banking System Threat Claims, Labels Stablecoin Deposit Erosion as Myth

Coinbase, a prominent exchange in the cryptocurrency market, recently rebutted the assertions that stablecoins pose a hazard to the banking sector by causing deposit erosion. In a carefully crafted blog update released on Tuesday, the crypto firm categorically rejected these concerns.

The Myth of Deposit Erosion

Depository institutions, primarily community banks, have raised concerns about the potential of stablecoins to cause significant outflows of deposits, resulting in what they call “deposit erosion”. Coinbase, however, argues that there is no substantive evidence to suggest a direct correlation between rising stablecoins adoption and drop in bank deposits.

Stablecoins: A Competitive Alternative

In Coinbase’s view, stablecoins do not pose a threat to the traditional lending sector. On the contrary, the exchange advocates that these digital assets offer a competitive alternative to the banks, potentially outweighing their annul windfall of $187 billion from swipe-fees. The firm also emphasizes that stablecoins must not be perceived as savings accounts but as facilitative payment mediums.

According to Coinbase, using stablecoins to make payments, such as settling bills with an overseas supplier, doesn’t represent a reallocation of savings but the choice of a faster and less expensive method of payment.

US Treasury Borrowing Advisory Committee Claims

The company also directly countered the recent projections made by the US Treasury Borrowing Advisory Committee. The report from the committee had forecasted a devastating $6 trillion potential deposit flight, a figure that is tripling the projected $2 trillion stablecoin market by 2028. “The math doesn’t add up,” Coinbase pointedly disagreed with the committee’s estimates.

Analysis on Stablecoin Activity

Around the same time as the blog post, Coinbase released an extensive paper wherein it revealed most of the stablecoin activities occur outside the US, mostly in regions with inefficient financial infrastructure. Citing data from the International Monetary Fund, the document stated that approximately half of the $2 trillion stablecoin transactions in 2024 happened outside the US, focusing primarily on Asia, Latin America, and Africa.

Since the majority of prominent stablecoins are pegged to the dollar, their use abroad, rather than eroding US deposits, helps in fortifying the global dominance of the dollar without significantly impacting the domestic credit availability, the paper argued.

Stablecoins and Banks Can Thrive Together

Furthermore, Coinbase mentioned that positive correlations between the stock performances of banks and crypto firms like Coinbase and Circle were observed after the approval of the Guiding and Establishing National Innovation for US Stablecoins Act (GENIUS Act). This indicates that both stablecoins and the traditional banking institutions can coexist and grow simultaneously.

Banks and Stablecoin Competition

Recently, Bitwise’s investment Chief Matt Hougan criticized US banks for voicing objections against stablecoin competition rather than focusing on improving their offerings, particularly their low-interest rates for depositors. He argued that banks have been exploiting depositors for a long time by providing low yields and are now in a panic due to the emergence of better alternatives like stablecoins.

US Banking Groups’ Appeal to Congress

In August, US banking groups, spearheaded by the Bank Policy Institute, pleaded with the Congress to amend the GENIUS Act to prevent stablecoin issuers from offering yields indirectly via crypto exchanges or affiliates. In return, the Crypto Council for Innovation and Blockchain Association asked US lawmakers to deny the proposal. They warned that these proposed revisions would only favor traditional banks by thwarting innovation in the increasingly vibrant crypto-space.

Thus, Coinbase’s stance represents a robust defence of the innovation and potential of stablecoins, challenging the fearful perspectives of traditional banking institutions and defending the growth and the evolution of the crypto landscape.
