The recent governance vote of Curve DAO has raised some eyebrows in the decentralized finance (DeFi) space. The community has voted against a proposal that would allocate 17.4 million CRV tokens, equivalent to 6.2 million USD, to the development team of decentralized exchanges (DEX).
Background
Michael Egorov, founder of Curve Finance, had put forth the proposal. It was about granting CRV tokens to the Swiss Stake AG. Notably, the Curve protocol, which is the third-largest DEX in DeFi with over 2.1 billion USD in total value locked (TVL), is developed by Swiss Stake. Egorov manages this firm.
The proposal’s intent was to finance activities varying from software development, security tasks, ecosystem support, to infrastructural development. These activities were meant to aid the Swiss Stake’s team of 25 people, all of whom are working on the protocol.
Vote Results
However, the vote ended with 54.46% of the participants voting against the proposal and 45.54% showing support towards it. Data from the vote reveals that addresses associated with two prominent DeFi protocols – Yearn Finance and Convex Finance, were responsible for almost 90% of the votes against the proposal.
Community Response
Several members from the community expressed their concerns about centralization in forum comments, questioning if Curve’s governance relies too heavily on a small group. There were suggestions that Swiss Stake should be more transparent on how they spent the past funds before any new funding is given the green light. However, the Curve Finance team did not provide comments on these concerns.
Decentralized Funding Allocation
Discussion members also posed arguments focusing on the allocation of past funds. They pointed out that past allocations had led to a significant distribution of protocol funds. Also, a suggestion was made for future grants to be distributed in numerous instalments to prevent a negative impact on the price of CRV.
Parallels in the DeFi Space
These recent developments mirror a similar controversy in another DeFi player, Aave. Aave Labs came under scrutiny when it redirected some of its fees to itself, instead of the DAO. This led to heated debates around tokenholder rights within the Aave community.
Repeat Proposal
This isn’t the first time Egorov has sought approval from the community to utilize the project’s fund to aid Swiss Stake. Back in August 2024, a proposal was made to secure over 21 million CRV tokens, which were worth around 6.3 million USD at the time. The funding was intended to support the growth of the Curve ecosystem. This proposal passed with nearly 91% of the voters in favour.
Peer Analysis
At the time of writing, the CRV token has appreciated by 1.5% daily but saw a sharp fall, nearly 50%, in the last three months, as is visible from the CoinGecko data.
These incidents shed light on the governance mechanisms playing out in the DeFi landscape, especially in the context of dependency on a group of key developers and transparency in how funding is utilized within an ecosystem. Also, it shows the involvement of the wider community in the decision-making process, shedding light on the democratic nature of these decentralized financial systems.
