Record High Ethereum Network Transactions and Staked Ether Bolstered by SEC’s Stance on Liquid Staking

Record High for Ethereum Network Transactions and Staked Ether Levels

In a recent surge of activity, both transactions on the Ethereum network and levels of staked ether (ETH) have reached unprecedented heights. Contributing to this state of affairs is a regulatory boost for liquid staking. The average daily transactions on the Ethereum blockchain hit a significant 1.74 million a few days ago. This statistic surpassed the prior record set earlier this year in May, which stood at 1.65 million transactions.

Rationale Behind ETH Transaction Surge

The surge in activity arrives as the Division of Corporation Finance of the Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) revealed that certain activities of liquid staking and staking receipt tokens fall outside the classification of securities under the 1933 Securities Act. This classification is dependent on a rigid set of assumptions being met. The SEC’s approach is seen as bullish by many. Resolving this legal uncertainty implies a safer environment for institutions and platforms to propose liquid staking products. The anticipation is that it enhances the demand for staked tokens like ETH, locks up more supply, and supports higher prices by alleviating selling pressure.

Ethereum Staking Contracts

Over 36 million ETH, representing roughly 30% of the supply, is now confined in staking contracts. This figure implies that holders are prepared to give up liquidity for yield as prices make a push towards $4,000. This price level had not been seen since December.

ETH Price Support and Public Crypto Treasury Companies

Moreover, ETH’s price action has been further backed by the escalating footprint of public crypto treasury companies. These firms buy and store tokens directly or through committed vehicles. Currently, firms holding ETH control the value of $11.77 billion of the second-largest cryptocurrency. Leading the way is BitMine Immersion Technologies with 833,100 ETH ($3.2 billion), closely followed by SharpLink Gaming at $2 billion, and The Ether Machine at $1.34 billion. Vitalik Buterin, Ethereum’s co-founder, agreed with this trend on a podcast conducted on Thursday. He provided insights that treasury vehicles offer investors more options catered to their different financial conditions. However, he also issued a warning about the potential risks of excessive leverage.

Buterin’s View on ETH as a Treasury Asset

In Buterin’s words, “ETH just being an asset that companies can have as part of their treasury is good and valuable – giving people more options is good.” Yet he also expressed concern about the potentially detrimental effects of excessive leverage in treasuries. On the warning side, he cautioned about a scenario where forced liquidations might lead to a cascade of price drop-offs. Nonetheless, Vitalik Buterin expressed confidence and hope that ETH investors would circumvent such pitfalls.

Performance of ETH

As of now, ETH has rallied 163% from its April low of $1,470, trading near the $3,909 mark. This performance is narrowing its performance gap with larger competitor bitcoin and Solanas sol (SOL). It’s worth noting that around 500,000 ETH, valued at about $1.8 billion, was staked in just the first half of June. This showcasing trend indicates the rising confidence among investors and points towards a continued reduction in liquid supply.
