Ethereum Sets Early December for Fusaka Upgrade Launch for Enhanced Network Efficiency and Scaling

The Ethereum network is positioned for significant changes, as the network’s core developers have scheduled the launch of its significant hard fork, Fusaka, for early December. This update intends to scale the network and improve its functionality.

Details of the Fusaka Upgrade

The Fusaka upgrade plans to go live on December 3rd. However, the escalated blob capacity, a primary feature of this release, will become effective two weeks later. This delay places the blob capacity increase around December 17th. Following this, there will be an additional blob capacity hard fork projected for January 7th, 2026. These consequential enhancements to blob capacity reportedly aim to more than double the current capacity. This information was provided by an Ethereum researcher, Christine D. Kim.

Prior Testing and Precautions

Before initiating the Fusaka upgrade on the Ethereum mainnet, the team plans to carry out three public testnets between early October and mid-November. These tests are an essential part of ensuring the successful implementation of the upgrade. The initial consensus was towards proceeding with a Max blob count of 15 for BPO1 (Blob Parameter Only) and a Max blob count of 21 for BPO2. A total of five Blob Parameter Only forks (BPOs) are planned for the Fusaka upgrade. This approach will ensure the Ethereum mainnet scales considerably but safely, according to a statement from the Ethereum developer community, ethPandaOps.

Importance of Blobs and Blob-Parameter Only Forks

BPO forks, or Blob-Parameter Only forks, alter only the parameters related to blob targets and limits. These forks do not necessitate any updates or changes from the client-side, leaving users unaffected and preserving network integrity in the short term. Blobs are crucial to Ethereum as they store large data sets off-chain. This off-chain storage approach enhances the efficiency of layer-2 networks and reduces transaction costs in the network. The usage of blobs has been continuously increasing since the implementation of the Dencun upgrade, with the average blob count per block currently standing at 5.1, up from 0.9 in March 2023.

The Continued Growth of Ethereum

The increase in blob usage and the forthcoming Fusaka upgrade represent continuous growth and innovation within the Ethereum network. The developers also recently announced a four-week code audit program offering $2 million to developers who discover and disclose vulnerabilities in the Fusaka codebase, showcasing the network’s commitment to maintaining its security and reliability. The launch of Fusaka comes after the Pectra upgrade, which occurred on May 7th and included enhancements such as raising the validator staking limit and introducing account abstraction. Furthermore, the amount of unstaked Ethereum hit a record high recently, with 2.6 million ETH entering the exit queue in a single week. Meanwhile, the queue to enter the staking pool reached a four-week low due to concerns about potential selling pressure from the ETH that will be unstaked.

Final Thoughts

Ethereum co-founder Vitalik Buterin has defended the protocol’s long exit queue, arguing that it’s a necessary measure to maintain the network’s credibility. His comments were in response to Galaxy Digital’s head of DeFi, Michael Marcantonio, who raised concerns about the length of the exit queue. The pursuit of continuous technological advancement contributes to the rapid evolution of the Ethereum network and the broader cryptocurrency sector. It’s clear that hard forks like Fusaka play essential roles in scaling these networks and making them more efficient for users. Future updates to Ethereum will continue to shape the course of its trajectory and influence in the digital currency space.
