Solana Enables Mainnet Feature to Shorten Target Slot Duration
Solana, a renowned blockchain network committed to improving its user experience, has recently activated a significant feature on its mainnet that reduces the target slot time. The alteration moves the slot time from the initial 400 milliseconds to a brisker 350 milliseconds, marking Solana’s first slot-time reduction since it was first introduced.
The implementation of this change demonstrates a clear desire to enable leaders to wrap up blocks within a shorter timeframe, thereby offering users quicker transaction confirmations. The technological advancement, when acknowledged through the lens of Solana’s explorer, clearly denotes the SIMD-0525 feature as live on Mainnet Beta at slot 440,208,000 during epoch 1019.
Staged Transition Information for Validators
For the network’s validators, this progressive shift doesn’t signal an abrupt leap towards the desired 200-millisecond endpoint. Rather, it represents the inception of a phased transition.
Solana has planned to activate every subsequent 50-millisecond decrease via a distinct feature gate during an upcoming epoch. By adopting this procedural method, if the frequency of block skipping elevates, the network gets the autonomy to intervene and halt proceedings.
First Slot-Time Reduction Unveiled by Solana
The operation was vividly described by Jacob Creech, Solana Foundation’s Vice President of Technology, last Friday. He addressed it as Solana’s premier slot-time reduction, while hinting that a target of 300 milliseconds was the next short-term objective on the horizon.
Moving forward, the agreed plan includes reducing the time slots in the sequence of 350, 300, 250 and finally, the ultimate goal, 200 milliseconds. However, the Solana Foundation has clearly stated that the network might not move to the next reduction phase if block skip rates rise beyond permissible levels or if they prove disruptive to the smooth operation of the network.
The Impact of Shortened Slots
This substantial slot time reduction compresses the period a leader has to finalize blocks, allows the next leader to receive transactions via Gulf Stream quicker and gives other validators more time to replay and vote on blocks.
Solana confirmed that the capacity to enable these functionalities was achieved thanks to significant improvements in validator-client, especially in sectors such as Turbine and Replay, which facilitated the enactment of its plan. However, the deployment of this crucial upgrade does not affect the quantity of ticks per slot, the four-slot leader span or the number of slots within an epoch.
Changes in Solana Network
As the slashed slot times mean that slots arrive faster, validators can complete epochs quicker than before. Although this reduced the total time required, the Solana Foundation has tagged the overall upgrade as a ‘breaking change’. It also specified that the mandatory indexing changes, a part of this breaking change, are yet to be finalized.
Currently, Solana’s documentation continues to label the standard slot duration as 400 milliseconds, even though the explorer indicates that the first 350-millisecond feature is active.
Moving Towards Full Activation Phase
The tentatively devised Agave v4.2 schedule, proposed by Anzas, aims to secure all four staged reductions for full mainnet activation. However, the Solana upgrade page has not provided an exact calendar date or a specifically designated epoch for the succeeding 300-millisecond step.
It is also noteworthy to mention that the network will not progress to the said reduction if the block skip rates unreasonably escalate.
