Cryptocurrency enthusiasts around the world might have noted the recent developments at Binance, the global crypto exchange behemoth. Making a strategic move to bolster its know-your-customer (KYC) and sanctions protocols, Binance has chosen to partner with financial analytics company Kharon and screening provider Neterium. This decision marks their commitment to prioritizing advanced security measures and ensuring compliance with international financial security standards.

A Strategic Partnership To Enhance Compliance and Security

The news came to light through a press release where Binance expressed its intent to leverage this partnership to greatly improve its sanctions screening process and tighten its KYC protocols. This effectively means that Binance intends to remain at the forefront of the industry by adhering to best-in-class data security and regulatory compliance measures.

The partnership will facilitate the delivery of Kharon’s data into Binance’s transaction screening environment. This will be executed in partnership with Neterium. The collaboration aims to play a crucial role in the development of dedicated data solutions. Such solutions can significantly enhance the capabilities of cryptocurrency trading platforms. It aims to effectively detect and prevent actions by any illicit actors, thus protecting the interests of the individuals and entities involved.

Statements from Binance and Kharon Leadership

Binance’s Global Head of Sanctions, Chagri Poyraz, underscored the importance of this partnership. He affirmed that as they aspire to maintain and expand the world’s largest cryptocurrency exchange, it’s critical to have best-in-class compliance programs. Partnering with Kharon and Neterium enables them to exploit Kharon’s excellent data coupled with Neterium’s advanced technology. This allows Binance to manage its risk more effectively.

Kharon’s Chief Client Officer, Howard Mendelsohn, too emphasized the significance of the partnership. He pointed out that Virtual Asset Service Providers need to have access to the highest quality data and advanced technology to support their compliance programs adequately. Therefore, their collaboration with Binance to offer data and analytic tools is a strategic move to manage and mitigate risk in the context of expanding regulatory expectations.

Binance’s Stand on Sanctions and Changes in Its Stance

Notably, Binance’s CEO, Changpeng Zhao (CZ), initially disapproved the idea of imposing sanctions on Russian users amidst the Ukraine war. As per his statement in March, he deemed blocking Russians from crypto exchanges as unethical, also noting that the evasion of economic sanctions wasn’t specific to the crypto industry.

This stance, however, underwent a change, presumably under government pressure, with Binance announcing further sanctions-related restrictions on its platform. Following the imposition of the European Union’s fifth package of restrictive measures against Russia, Binance was compelled to limit services for several entities.

These included Russian nationals or individuals residing in Russia, or any legal establishments in Russia, holding crypto assets valued over 10,000 EUR. Elucidating on this, Binance released a statement in a blog post, underscoring that they believed in leading the industry in implementing these sanctions and other major exchanges should also abide by these rules.

This slew of developments reflects Binance’s firm commitment to adjust and adhere to global economic regulations and sanctions, thereby securing the interests of its users and the broader global financial ecosystem.
