Binance Enhances its Sanctions Screening and KYC through Association with Kharon and Neterium

Binance, a globally renowned cryptocurrency exchange, plans to ramp up its Know-Your-Customer (KYC) and sanctions protocols. It aims to achieve this by partnering with Kharon, a financial analytics firm, and Neterium, a provider of API-native screening.

Benefits of the Partnership

Binance aims to use this partnership to harness industry-leading data and analytics to bolster its sanctions screening processes and reinforce KYC measures. The integration of Kharon’s data into Binance’s screening system, in collaboration with Neterium, promises to provide additional data solutions. These solutions are expected to improve the exchange’s ability to identify and impede actors engaged in illicit activities.

Binance’s Commitment to Compliance

Chagri Poyraz, the Global Head of Sanctions at Binance, emphasized the firm’s intention to evolve its compliance protocols to become a market leader. Collaborating with Kharon and Neterium allows Binance to utilize Kharon’s top-class data and Neterium’s sophisticated technology to address potential risks.

As well as facilitating regulatory compliance, these partnerships will help Binance sustain and grow its global cryptocurrency exchange platform.

Kharon’s Perspective on the Partnership

On the other side of the partnership, Howard Mendelsohn, Chief Client Officer at Kharon, highlighted the need for high-quality data and technology. Virtual asset service providers demand these tools to support their respective compliance programs. According to Mendelsohn, Kharon’s alliance with Binance contributes significantly to this goal, while also addressing the growing regulatory expectations and risk mitigation requirements.

Binance’s Response to Sanctions Against Russia

Interestingly, Changpeng Zhao, CEO of Binance, initially resisted the implementation of sanctions against Russian users amid the Ukrainian war outbreak. In his view, sanction evasion was not solely a concern linked to crypto, and blocking Russian users from crypto exchanges seemed ethically questionable.

However, shortly afterwards, Binance took an about-face approach, most likely due to governmental pressure, and announced additional sanctions-related restrictions for its platforms.

Requiring Compliance from Russian Users

In the face of the European Union’s fifth package of sanctions against Russia, Binance was forced to place limits on its services to Russian nationals or residents, as well as legal entities based in Russia.

Such rules apply only if these users possess cryptocurrency assets that value more than 10,000 Euros. Binance’s stance is clear; to efficiently implement these sanctions, the exchange has to adhere to the industry’s leading-edge practices, and other major exchanges should soon follow suit.

In conclusion, Binance continues to evolve its strategies and alliances to strengthen its services and compliance. This proactive approach will not only facilitate regulatory adherence but also enhance security for its users across the globe.
