TAO, The Decentralized AI Token, Records Massive Gains

Recent months have portrayed a favourable picture for cryptocurrency enthusiasts, especially those vested in the TAO token. The Bittensor’s native TAO token has seen a significant increase in its value, with its price rising immensely and rapidly. From pegging around $180 at the beginning of March, the cryptocurrency has surged roughly 90% over the past month, trading above $332 as of March 24.

Ripple Effect On Bittensor Subnets

This overwhelming wave of prosperity does not end at the TAO token, but it spills over into its subnet token ecosystem. As per data obtained from CoinGecko, the Bittensor Subnets category witnessed an increase of 30% over the past 24 hours, reaching a combined market capitalization of $1.47 billion. Moreover, the trading volume toppling $118 million is no small feat.

What are Bittensor Subnets?

Operating within the Bittensor ecosystem, subnets are specialized mini-networks, each catering to a specific artificial intelligence task. These tasks range from training language models and decentralized compute to sports predictions and cybersecurity. Within each subnet, miners compete to generate high-quality AI outputs, and validators evaluate performance and allocate TAO rewards correspondingly.

What is Unique About Bittensor Subnets?

Since the launch of dynamic TAO (dTAO) in February 2025, all subnets operate as their individual automated market maker, assigned with their native token. The value of each subnet token directly correlates with the TAO staked into the subnets’ reserves, hence establishing an economic link between the price of TAO and the performance of the subnet token.

The Rise and Rise of Bittensor Subnets

The subnet ecosystem crossed the $500 million mark for the first time in April 2025. By July the same year, the combined market cap neared $1 billion, attributed to the establishment of TAO treasury firms like xTAO and Synaptogenix.

The Reciprocal Relationship Keeping TAO’s Success Alive

The subnet ecosystem and TAO share a symbiotic relationship. The appreciation of TAO makes each subnet’s TAO reserve more valuable, which consequently leads to a rise in subnet token prices. This thus attracts increased staking and attention towards the ecosystem.

Key Drivers of TAO’s Meteoric Rise

The TAO rally gained momentum post endorsements from Nvidia CEO Jensen Huang and investor Chamath Palihapitiya for Bittensor’s decentralized AI training model. This sparkled enthusiasm which spilled onto subnet tokens.

Top Subnet Token Performers

One of the leading subnet tokens is emplar (SN3), the subnet responsible for the Covenant-72B model, which led to the Nvidia-endorsement-led rally. It boasts a $137 million market cap after having rallied 444% over the previous month. The list of promising tokens also includes OMEGA Labs (SN24) with 440%, Level 114 (SN114) with 280%, BitQuant (SN15) with 230%, Nova (SN68) with 218%, and Grail (SN81) with 211%.

Other Established Subnet Tokens Show Positive Momentum

Even the more mature subnet tokens with larger market caps have posted strong monthly returns. Examples include Chutes (SN64), which has a $132 million market cap, with an increase of 54% over 30 days. Other performers include Targon (SN4), gaining 166%, Ridges AI (SN62), gaining 85%, and Hippius (SN75), rising 115%.

New Revelations Catalyzing the Rally

A key catalyst for the broader rally was the unveiling of Covenant-72B, a large language model trained permissionlessly across Bittensor’s Subnet 3 by more than 70 contributors using ordinary internet hardware. In a recent academic paper, the model scored a 67.1 MMLU, putting it within competitive range.

“Complementary” Endorsement From Nvidia CEO

The Nvidia CEO endorsed both proprietary and open-source AI models as complementary during the podcast appearance, framing foundational AI technology as benefiting from decentralized innovation.

Future Scope of Bittensor Network

The Bittensor network plans to expand its active subnet capacity from 128 to 256 later this year. This expansion might instigate a new wave of subnet token launches, further broadening this category.

Conclusion

The rapid surge of subnet tokens hints towards the market’s confidence in the decentralized AI narrative. It signifies the belief in Bittensor’s expanding network of specialized AI subnets to stay relevant. It appears potently that the AI-based cryptocurrency, TAO, and its robust ecosystem are here for a long run.
