Bitcoin’s BIP Editors Dismiss Luke Dashjr From Role Following Controversial Soft Fork

In recent news from the world of cryptocurrencies, Luke Dashjr was ousted from his role as a Bitcoin Improvement Proposals (BIP) editor on Monday. The move comes after Dashjr’s much-debated soft fork attracted considerable reaction, causing thousands of nodes to switch to a new chain which, interestingly, hasn’t generated a block since 8th August.

The BIP repository doesn’t possess a laid-out process to strip someone of their role as an editor. This lack of clarity further complicated the matter. Dashjr’s removal was executed by nullifying his GitHub permissions and eliminating his name from the list of editors in BIP 3, the document that discusses the procedure for proposal submission.

Confirmation of Dashjr’s Removal

Bryan Bishop, a remaining editor among the five, substantiated Dashjr’s dismissal on Monday from the Bitcoin Development Mailing List. According to him, Dashjr no longer held privileged access to the BIP content repository. Dashjr’s dismissal was facilitated by Jon Atack, who confirmed Dashjr’s revoked admin privileges and affirmed the merger of pull request #2248, an action that wiped Dashjr’s name and email from BIP 3.

Reasons for Dashjr’s Removal

Erhardt, another editor who is also known as Murch, introduced the case against Dashjr, which revolved around four key issues: potential conflict of interest, nominal contribution, endorsement of a contentious fork, and a lack of coordination with other editors. Dashjr had been deeply engaged with BIP110, a divisive proposal that resulted in a fork.

Allegations and Counter-Allegations

Erhardt made serious allegations against Dashjr, suggesting that Dashjr exploited his editorial authority to give the contentious proposal an undue advantage. Dashjr, on his part, denied these allegations categorically, asserting that his actions were in adherence to the BIP process that had been consistent for years.

A Closer Look at Accusations

There were several criticisms against Dashjr. He was accused of accelerating BIP-110’s approval process by assigning it a number prematurely, and for promoting a controversial fork considered detrimental for Bitcoin’s integrity. Among Dashjr’s offences was his minimal involvement — since new editors joined in 2024, Dashjr contributed to less than 1% of the comments in the repository.

His attempt to assign a BIP number to the draft publicly on Twitter before proper discourse on the mailing list, and merging a PR updating the BIP within minutes of its opening, were frowned upon as hasty and arbitrary actions not befitting an editor.

Reactions and Support

Despite the serious charges against Dashjr, support came from multiple quarters, including Bitcoin Core contributors and a fellow BIP editor. Some supported Dashjr’s prompt actions while others highlighted the conflict of interest due to the fork. However, the overall consensus seemed to incline towards Dashjr’s removal from his editorial role.

On BIP-110

It’s worth noting that BIP-110 was the cause of major disagreement. It enjoyed only minimal support, with a mere 2.53% of blocks signaling in favor within a difficulty period, quite short of the 55% required for approval. Dashjr was instrumental in enforcing BIP-110, which led to the consequent split in nodes and eventually his dismissal.

The Aftermath and Future Steps

Ambiguities relating to BIP editorship and dismissal procedures have come to light following this incident. Calls have been made to update BIP 3 with a clause explicitly establishing the editors’ duty of neutrality and forbidding the promotion of contentious forks. Future decisions are also expected to be more democratic, involving contributions from repository users and providing the accused ample time to respond before taking action.

Dashjr’s future involvement in cryptocurrency projects remains uncertain. He stepped back from his role at Ocean, citing his intention to focus on Bitcoin and open-source projects towards Bitcoin’s long-term health. His ties with Bitcoin Knots, however, remain unaffected, where he continues as lead maintainer.
