Ethereum Co-founder Views on the EU’s Proposed Chat Control Legislation

Buterin’s opinion on Chat Control Legislation

Ethereum co-founder Vitalik Buterin has recently voiced his concerns about the proposed Chat Control legislation by the European Union. In a publicized post, he cautioned that this dangerous legislation threatens the core idea of privacy in digital communications. Buterin staunchly expressed his disagreement with obligatory surveillance measures, which would compel tech platforms to examine private messages for unlawful content. The co-founder highlighted that every individual has an inherent right to privacy and security for their personal communications. He wrote, “You can’t establish a secure society by making its people insecure”. In this context, he mentioned the backdoors created for legal enforcement that can be manipulated, thereby compromising everyone’s safety.

The European Opposition on the Regulation

The post by Buterin was a subsequent response to another shared message by Pieter Levels, an entrepreneur. Levels urged Europeans to turn down the proposed regulation as it may allow officials to access personal messages of citizens. Moreover, he criticized the duplicity of lawmakers reportedly lobbying to excuse themselves from the Chat Control legislation. This, he contended, is a clear indicator of the questionable intent behind the legislation. Buterin pointed out, “The fact that government officials want to exempt themselves from their own law is telling”. A report disclosed that a draft of the proposed law might have provisions for the official authorities – interior ministers, police, intelligence, and military staff, exempting them from the proposed mass surveillance provisions intended to scan private chats.

The Current Scenario of Chat Control Legislation

According to current details, fifteen EU countries are affirming their support, but fall just short of the 65% population threshold mandatory for the legislation’s passage. Germany is currently sitting on the pivotal vote and responsible for determining the law’s fate. If Germany casts its vote in favor of the legislation, it becomes highly likely to pass. Otherwise, due to abstain or opposition, the law probably fails.

Crypto Advocates’ Opinion on the Proposal

Crypto allies like Diode’s CEO Hans Rempel and Elisenda Fabrega from Brickken have opined that this proposal might encourage users to navigate towards decentralized Web3 platforms that naturally feature privacy. Rempel specifically outlined Web3’s “not your keys, not your data” spirit that appeals to users who are disappointed by centralized systems. On the other hand, Fabrega cautioned about a possible fragmentation of the EU digital market that could potentially decrease its influence over global privacy standards.

Violation of EU Charter

It was also pointed out that this legislation violates Articles 7 and 8 of the EU Charter. These articles are meant to safeguard private communications and personal data. Additionally, Rempel warns that giving governments control over backdoor access could pose serious cybersecurity risks considering their history of data breaches. In conclusion, the controversial EU’s proposed Chat Control legislation fuels much debate between advocates for privacy and those championing security measures. Buterin, the Ethereum co-founder, is among the critics, providing critical advice on the potential consequences of such a regulation and calling on lawmakers to reconsider the potential negative impact on digital privacy and security.
